Introduction:
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 is a powerful
digital video editing application designed to
assist users in converting raw video clips
into a smooth, cohesive presentation. It is
intended for anyone needing top of the line
video editing software for editing digital
video footage.
I want to begin by emphasizing that
Premiere is positioned for the high-end
computer and videographers with previous
video editing skills. It is powerful enough to
transform your raw footage into works of
art. This power translates into higher costs
than your typical user may be willing to
spend. Unless you are ready to commit to
$700 or more depending on add-ons and
education, you will want to stay with a basic
DVD editing package such as Roxio’s Easy
DVD Creator for $70.
Learning Curve:
I have used both Sony’s Click to DVD
and Roxio’s Easy DVD Creator in the past
and each was fairly easy to learn in one
sitting. Within 2-3 days, a typical user could
master all of the features with little
difficulty.
I spent my first 3 hours “playing”
without reading Premiere’s manual or
watching the overview DVD to get a feel for
what Premiere could offer. Unlike other
light-weight DVD editing programs,
Premiere Pro 1.5 is far too complex to try to
learn in this manner and I would not
recommend such experimentation. It will
easily frustrate the user who wants to learn
the basics in a single short sitting.
Be prepared to take some time to watch
the DVD overview and read the user’s
manual before using the software. You’ll
feel much less overwhelmed if you
understand the screen basics the first time
you try to use the software. Premiere has a
steep leaning curve which is expected for a
high-end and powerful program.
Hardware Requirements:
Premiere is so powerful that you will
need more than a basic home user computer
to provide fluid usage. Adobe lists the
system minimums as Pentium III 800 MHz
machine with only 256MB RAM, however
users should seriously consider the
recommended 3GHz Pentium IV with
1.0GB+ of RAM. While running on a
Pentium IV 2.4 GHz with 1GB RAM, I
experienced performance drains compared to
my other DVD editing software. I feel the
true memory requirement is over 1GB
RAM, which seems considerably steep.
While running on my system, I
frequently crashed my computer using other
DVD editing software. Premiere Pro stood
tall and has yet to crash in the middle of an
editing session. This was surprising
considering the amount of processing taking
place.
Integration:
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 as a standalone
is a flexible, powerful video editing
package.
When it is combined with other Adobe
digital video applications (After Effects,
Audition, Encore, and Photoshop) it can
provide a complete video, audio and DVD
editing studio.
However, without this combination,
